The 10 top scenic drives in New Zealand

posted in: Places, Things to do 0

If you are looking for a leisurely New Zealand holiday then the country’s roads offer a fantastic opportunity to see outstanding scenery close-up.

New Zealand Autocar magazine has published its top 10 roads trips, based on the quality of scenery, the destinations and the type of road itself.

Here they are:

The top 10 scenic drives in New Zealand

1. Stratford – Taumarunui (142km)

Despite a twisting road with many tortuous corners, this slow haul provides glimpses into the country’s pioneering past and the mountainous interior of the North Island. Known as the Forgotten World Highway, it includes a stopover at Whangamomona, the small town declared an independent republic by its 40 or so residents.

2. Taihape – Napier (152km)

This North Island road is affectionately known by locals as Gentle Annie and takes visitors through high sheep country. Till recently, much of the road was unsealed, making the nickname somewhat ironic – but these days, the drive provides a comfortable drive through spectacular scenery.

3. Motueka – Collingwood (107km)

Autocar describes this South Island drive over the crest of Takaka Hill as “one of the great moments in New Zealand motoring.” It includes views of the glacier-carved Takaka valley, mountains of Kahurangi National Park and the distant Farewell Spit.

4. Maungatapere – Kaikohe (71km)

Visitors to the Bay of Islands, in the North Island, can take this road to bypass Whangarei and head north using the less busy road through bush-lined valleys.

5. Westport – Kohaihai (117km)

The Karamea Highway might be seen as a dead end, but it offers motorists the chance to see sub-tropical rainforests, wild birds and animals, with stunning views.

6. Christchurch – Culverden – Hanmer – Maruia Springs – Reefton – Westport – Punakaiki – Greymouth – Arthur’s Pass – Christchurch. (598km).

Conde Nast Traveller once named the Westport to Greymouth leg of this route the world’s second greatest drive (after the Corniche). The drive is notable for having luscious green wilds on one side, and crashing seas on the other.

7. Christchurch – Motunau Beach – Kaikoura (196km)

Most of this drive is on State Highway 1 in the South Island.

8. Gisborne to Opotiki (320km)

Gems along this route include New Zealand’s biggest pohutukawa tree and the East Cape lighthouse.

9. Murupara to Wairoa (160km)

This trek takes you through one of the more remote places in the North Island. The State Highway 38 section goes through Te Urewera National Park and Autocar recommends a sedate pace of travel.

10. Christchurch – Akaroa – Christchurch (160km return)

The magazine points out you can do this return trip in three hours – but that doesn’t account for how many times you stop to enjoy the view!

5 of the best places to surf in New Zealand

posted in: Places, Things to do 0

New Zealand is spoilt for choice when it comes to great surf beaches. With 10,000 kilometres of coast facing the big swells of the Pacific and Southern oceans New Zealand offers spectacular and world-renowned surf conditions. But you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the white stuff.

Big surfers riding big waves draw big crowds. Up to 15,000 people have watched World Series surf events from New Zealand’s surf beaches. Just watching the show is great entertainment.

The travel site newzealandholidaytravel.com listed its five top spots for serious surfers.

5 of the best places to surf in New Zealand

Raglan, Waikato, North Island

One of New Zealand’s most famous surf beaches. Raglan is a mecca for board riders throughout the world. The famous left-hander wave in Manu Bay can be ridden for 2km (that’s a 10-minute ride) and was featured in the 1966 cult surfing film Endless Summer. Whale Bay is also world famous, if anything for even more tasty waves. Raglan itself is laid back with many cafes and craft shops – and becomes a party town around new year.

Piha (30km west of Auckland)

The birthplace of surfing in New Zealand, Piha is also on the world surfing circuit. The surf is not for the faint-hearted but the beach and surrounding area are popular and worth a visit. A long-running reality TV show ‘Piha Rescue’ follows the working lives of Piha’s surf lifesavers and has been broadcast in many countries around the world

The Surf Highway, Taranaki

The North Island’s Taranaki Coast offers the most consistent and some say best surf conditions in New Zealand, with good, even breaks on many beaches. The so-called Surf Highway is a section of State Highway 45 that runs from New Plymouth to Hawera with access to all the best bays. The Taranaki Coast has played host to World Series surf competitions drawing big crowds to see the world’s finest surf heroes in action. Opunake beach (64km from New Plymouth) and Stent Road (37km from New Plymouth) are among the more famous.

Gisborne, East Coast, North Island

Gisborne enjoys a growing reputation in New Zealand as surf centre thanks to its warm climate and abundant surf schools. The main town surf beach, Waikanae, is ideal for beginners whilst the more accomplished enjoy the beaches at Wainui. Surfing at dawn has a particular appeal here as for most of the year Gisborne is the first town in the world to see the sun each day, being the closest to the International Date Line.

Mason Bay, Stewart Island

Travel to the southernmost extreme of New Zealand and be challenged by truly massive wave breaks. They unpredictable but when the sea delivers big waves, they are really big.
